We are excited to announce that the RA Gun Club (RAGC) and Cornwall Handgun Club (CHC) are working in partnership to provide a bullseye match on October 24 at the RA Gun Club for our respective members. The RAGC has committed to review its schedule of activities to identify dates and times to hold additional matches.
Competing yearly in Olympic-Style Rimfire Pistol Bullseye is part of the path to getting an exemption letter to purchase a handgun (Note that we have been advised by the Shooting Federation of Canada (SFC) that rifle bullseye experience doesn't count towards satisfying the requirements for an exemption letter). If you intend to pursue an exemption letter, you need to join the Shooting Federation of Canada here before you start as a new competitor. The steps are here and here. You will need a minimum of 3 match results each year which must be attained at a minimum of 2 clubs total, so in our case, competing at the RAGC as well as CHC satisfies this requirement.
The event is open to anyone and you can bring paid guests who can compete.
You can bring your own rimfire handgun that can fire a round every 2 seconds on average - it doesn't have to a match grade pistol - any rimfire revolver or semi-auto pistol will do. Note - if you plan on competing at clubs other than the CHC or RAGC, which is required to get a letter, iron sights, maximum 153mm/6" barrel and maximum 220mm/8.6" sight radius will likely be required.
If you do not have access to a handgun, the RAGC will provide you with one at no extra charge so you can compete - just bring your own .22LR ammo.
If you need instructions on how to legally borrow a handgun from another person (not a business or the club), let us know (it's very easy) and then you don't need to use a club handgun if you prefer to practice ahead of time on your own.
Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your ticketed time to unpack your gear. As per section 7(1) and (2) of the Shooting Clubs and Shooting Ranges Regulations (SOR/98-212), upon arrival RAGC Officials will provide RAGC range safety rule instruction on where to uncase firearms, where ammunition can be handled, procedures for entering/exiting range, etc. Gear up is at 7:30 am with first shot at 8 am for the first squad. Each squad will take approximately 1 hour to shoot all their sighters and stages starting at their ticketed time. There are 4 shooting lanes to cycle shooters through and thus 4 tickets per time slot.
8 am and 9 am time slots are reserved for RA Members so they can be free to volunteer for the rest of the day. The remaining time slots are open to anyone.
The Range will be unavailable from noon to 1:30 pm.
Last squad starts at 8:30 pm.
The course of fire is ISSF 25m standard pistol with SFC modified (smaller) 20 yard targets to account for the shorter 20 yard distance available.
At the start of the match the competitor may fire unlimited sighting shots within 150 seconds. Bring your own or use the RAGC provided spotting scopes, which are provided at each shooting station, if you intend to make some last second adjustments to your sights or want to see where you are hitting in general.
The 60-shot match is divided into 5-shot strings with different timings:
Stage 1 - 4 strings of 5 rounds each within 150 seconds for each string – competitor can begin the series in any fashion they choose.
Stage 2 - 4 strings of 5 rounds each within 20 seconds for each string – competitor must begin each string with the pistol in one outstretched arm from the 45-degree angle starting position.
Stage 3 - 4 strings of 5 rounds each within 10 seconds for each string – competitor must begin each string with the pistol in one outstretched arm from the 45-degree angle starting position. It's a good idea to practice a cadence of approximately 1 shot per second to allow for initial sight alignment.
If someone is mobility-impaired, they can shoot the entire match from a seated position.
Official SFC targets will be provided, the cost for the match is:
$10 including HST and a club handgun for RA Members
$20 including HST and a club handgun for non-RA Members selected during checkout
This will cover the 4 official targets plus sufficient centre patches (one for sighting and one for each target for Stages 2 and 3). You can keep your targets at the end of the match.
You can download the centre patch of the target here to practice with, make sure you print it at actual size and practice at 20 yards. If you can only practice at 25m, visit a CHC match to download 25m targets. The full 16.5"x16.5" target can be downloaded here.
Range officers and other volunteers are needed, it would be appreciated if you could please sign up for a free Volunteer ticket even if you are also shooting (so register for 2 tickets, one as a Competitor at your defined time slot, and one as a general Volunteer when you are not shooting).
